Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa; Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Naledi Pandor; and Deputy Minister of Mineral Resources, Mr Godfrey Oliphant, participated in the launch of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of shale gas development with the Ministries of Water Affairs and Sanitation; and Energy on 12 May 2015.

The SEA for shale gas development was commissioned by the Departments of Environmental Affairs, Water and Sanitation; Science and Technology; and Mineral Resources. This team is supported by the CSIR, the South African National Biodiversity Institute and the Council for Geosciences.
